UTStarcom's PAS/iPAS Total Solution addresses the issue of wireless access to a traditional PSTN network and effectively resolves the mobility challenges of personal communications. The handset not only offers freedom of communication within a designated network coverage area; but now also includes roaming between different cities. Moreover, it supplies multiple value-added services such as: ShortMessage Service (SMS), E-mail, Web surfing and a high-speed wireless data access and location service. These enhanced services are a logical progression to meet both market demands and our innate desire for client satisfaction.
The PAS wireless access Total Solution realizes PHS access using the existing resources of the local exchange (PSTN). Using powerful softswitch architecture, a multi-protocol iPAS Gateway and IP signaling networks, the advanced iPAS system not only meets the increasing requirement for a variety of communication services, but also provides a smooth migration path to the development and further evolution of next generation networks.
UTStarcom's PAS/iPAS system has been launched in 200 cities in Mainland China, with a capacity to manage up to 70 million subscribers, and moreover, it has also been deployed with tremendous success in Taipei, India, Haiti, Philippines, Peru, Chile, Honduras and some communities within the United States.
In the midst of increasingly severe competition, operators need to quickly expand their subscriber base and offer multiple new cost-effective services to strengthen their viability and market share. UTStarcom's PAS/iPAS Total solution can competently meet these requirements and fully ensure rapid returns on investment. By offering a number of new revenue-generating services, it allows operators toachieve profitability much quicker than the alternative of building costly and time-consuming wireline networks.

PAS/iPAS wireless access components include:
PAS/iPAS wireless access components include the CSC (Cell Station Controller) and CS (Cell Station). CSC receives E1 signals from the RT/Gateway and controls CS via twisted pair wire.
CS has different types in terms of their transmitting powers, i.e. 10mW and 500mW. Of these, 500mW CS can provide 1C7T or 1C3T, and has the most attractive feature of 8 branches MRC (Maximum Ratio Combing). By deploying sectored cells, grouped cells (1C15T), and hybrid network architecture with high and low transmission power CSs in the network planning, network coverage and and communication quality can be greatly improved.
Due to its low transmission power (10mW), the handset emits far less radiation, and thus has less of an impact on users health. In this sense, it has been referred to as a human-friendly green handset.
System Features
●Large capacity, high roaming rate: One single iPAS network can accommodate up to 5 million subscribers.
●Carrier class reliability: The reliability as high as 99.999% is guaranteed by the redundant configuration of the OSS server cluster and the gateway, as well as board level hot-swap functionality.
●Flexibility and scalability: The distributed architecture supports flexible scalability of the system function and linear expansion of the system scale.
●High traffic/subscriber density: System supported overlap network planning and dynamic channel allocation function.
●Multi-path Fading Immunity: Antenna selection diversity and moderate channel bit rate provide superior immunity to multi-path interference.
●Wireline-equivalent Voice Quality: 32Kbps ADPCM provides high voice quality equivalent to that of wireline circuits.
●Security: An authentication algorithm, which does not send the authentication key over the radio link, provides high security against subscriber ID snooping and cloning.
●Privacy: Digital voice channel coding with scrambling protects against eavesdropping.
●Human-friendly handsets: The handsets have a low transmission power (only 10mW, being less than one tenth that of other mobiles) and have a minimal effect on the human body.
●Powerful service expansion capability. Various services can be launched flexibly and conveniently on the open platform of the operating support system
●A range of solutions for different coverage environments: Low cost integrated solutions are available specially customized for rural areas and populous cities.
●Quick construction of the network - The system adopts wireless access to replace copper cables, thus saving labor and material resources on the construction and maintenance of the network. Due to its quick installation and rapid provision of services, the system can effectively meet the requirements of the operators and subscribers.
●Easy installation of cell stations - The compact indoor cell stations are easy-install and the outdoor cell stations can be installed on housetops, sidewalls or poles.
