2008年3月11日，根据国务院机构改革方案，国务院组建工业和信息化部，由李毅中任部长。将国家发改委工业行业管理有关职责，国防科工委会核电管理以外的职责，信息产业部和国信办的职责，整合划入该部；国家烟草专卖局与新组建国家国防科技工业局亦由工业和信息化部管理。2008年6月29日上午10时，工业和信息化部正式挂牌。
